Delays on Hwy. 1 west of Calgary due to vehicles blocking lanes: RCMP

Mounties in Cochrane are advising drivers of possible slow downs on Highway 1 west of Calgary due to an apparent carbon tax protest.

In a Friday release, the RCMP warn of slow moving traffic on Highway 1 between Jumping Pound Road and Highway 22.

Police say there are about four or five vehicles taking up highway lanes and driving at slower speeds.

Cpl. Gina Slaney tells CityNews it’s not confirmed, but it is believed that carbon tax protesters are behind the slow downs.

The RCMP are urging drivers to use caution in that area as they try and resolve the matter.

Demonstrators snarled traffic on Highway 1 for much of the day on Apr. 1 in response to the increase to the federal carbon tax.

The event, organized by a group called Nationwide Protest Against Carbon Tax, was just one of many that took place across the country that day.
