A cybersecurity breach that forced the closure of all Calgary Public Library (CPL) locations one week ago was likely caused by an attempted ransomware attack.
The investigation into the matter continues, although in an update Friday, CPL said its cybersecurity team suspects there was an attempted ransomware attack that its monitoring systems blocked.
As part of containment procedures, all servers and systems were shut down and library services requiring technology are still not available to customers.
CPL says it hasn’t been in communication with any threat agents.
The team is still working to figure out if any employee or membership data was impacted. CPL adds any impact to privacy will be reported as soon as it becomes aware.
CPL said it continues to see service disruptions due to the breach, however, all locations are operating at regular hours with modified service.
ervices include limited access to collection browsing, up to 10 material check-out and hold pick-ups per card, and access to study areas and drop-in meeting room access with limited availability.
CPL says programs and events that don’t require technology, like Family Storytime, Baby Rhyme Time, and Reading Buddies, are still available to customers.
Unavailable services include book returns, technology and digital services including the Digital Library and eResources, online room booking and program registration, and programs and events that require technology — including all virtual programming.
The library says due dates for all borrowed materials will be extended until further notice.
