Fire crews are battling a large fire that appears to have completely destroyed a condo building under construction in northwest Calgary.
Calls came in to the CityNews newsroom just before 5:30 p.m. Friday about a massive fire on Arbour Lake Road west of Nose Hill Drive.
Thick black smoke was reported by several transit commuters and motorists throughout the northwest.
Images from the scene show what appears to be a condo building under construction completely engulfed in flames, with firefighters working to extinguish the fire.
CityNews cameraman Nick Blakeney was at the scene and says crews were pushing people back due to an explosion hazard.
“I guess there was a lot of propane tanks and other gases on site, so they pushed everybody back,” he says.
Blakeney says at least a dozen fire trucks were at the scene, and crews were using ladder trucks to spray water on to the fire in an effort to get it under control.
There’s no word on any injuries.
