Colleen Klein, the wife of former Calgary Mayor and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, died Tuesday.
The couple’s daughter, Teresa, confirmed the news on social media, stating Colleen passed away peacefully the morning of June 4 after suffering months of failing health.
Premier Danielle Smith took to social media to honor Colleen, who some called the first lady of Calgary, offering thoughts and condolences to her family.
“Colleen’s unwavering support and dedication to her family and community left an indelible mark on Alberta,” Smith wrote.
Opposition NDP Leader Rachel Notley also extended her condolences to the friends and family of Colleen.
Former Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi wrote fondly of Colleen, saying she was kind and gracious to him during his time in municipal office.
“Colleen Klein was a force in her own right, and Alberta is a better place because she was part of shaping it,” he posted to X.
Colleen was known for her charitable work in the city, and was the beloved right-hand woman to her husband, who died in 2013.
She received an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary in 2002.
The family says there will be no service at Colleen’s request, and they are requesting privacy.
