City, province agree to restart work on Calgary Green Line

Hope for the completion of Calgary’s Green Line LRT has been revived after “productive discussions” between the city and province over the past few weeks.

A statement made by the province Thursday indicates both parties have agreed to advance the work from 4 Street SE to Shepard.

The province says this decision preserves more than 700 jobs and does good on both parties’ shared financial investments.

With that, Alberta says the $1.53 billion previously committed is now back on the table to support the continuation of work.

AECOM is also currently working on a revised downtown alignment on behalf of the province, which says the new plan will be either at-grade or elevated and connect into the Red and Blue Lines, the new event centre, and communities in southeast Calgary.

The city is assisting in AECOM’s review, according to the province.

Both parties say they are committed to continuing work on the Green Line and are “optimistic” that decisions in the best interest of Calgary commuters will continue to be made.

CityNews has reached out to the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta for further comment.

This is a developing story. More to come.
