City of Calgary selling site of former Midfield Trailer Park

The City of Calgary has begun selling lots in Midfield Heights, at the site of a former mobile home park that was marred by drama following the eviction of tenants several years ago.

In 2014, the city said it would close Midfield Mobile Home Park in September 2017 due to 40-year-old water and sewer lines that had “long reached the end of their life cycle.”

This eventually prompted a public legal battle that ended with residents of the park being evicted in February 2018.

Now, the land is being offered up to developers in a sale running until July 9.

“This premier development site offers an array of opportunities for exceptional mixed-use properties nestled amid golf courses and well-established communities in northeast Calgary,” the city said on its website. “Future residents of this much sought-after neighbourhood will live close to nature, schools and the absolute best of urban living.”

Mayor Jyoti Gondek was asked outside council chambers Tuesday why it has taken so long to get to this point.

“There has been a lot of land development work that had to take place, there were approvals that had to be done,” she said. “I don’t believe we’ve moved as quickly as we could on that site so I’m encouraged to see that there is actually taking place now. But I, along with you, wish we had moved quicker.”

There are seven fully serviced lots on the site along 16 Avenue near Deerfoot Trail, described as shovel ready, and suitable for at-grade and multi-storey developments with the potential for more than 1,500 units.
