Calgary’s fifth annual Chinook Blast is in full swing this holiday weekend, but the extreme cold gripping the city has led organizers to take it indoors.
An update Sunday says the extreme cold warning from Environment Canada led to all outdoor events on Stephen Avenue being cancelled.
However, organizers say indoor events are still available.
That includes ImaginAsian: Asian Night Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pioneer, and a winter-themed event at Calgary’s Central Library from 1-4 p.m. The latter features a screening of Wicked, sports games, and a winter craft activity.
In the meantime, for those looking to brave the cold for some “snow, speed, style, and cheese,” day two of SkiijorDue–a combination of horse-drawn skiing called skijor and fondue–is still a go at the Confluence Historic Site and Parklands from 12-5 p.m.
For Family Day–the last day of the festival–the YYC Music Awards Showcase, performances, and “more,” will be on the second floor of the CORE Shopping Centre from 1-5 p.m.
The extreme cold on Friday also saw performances moved indoors.
Alisha Reynolds, CEO of Tourism Calgary, told CityNews in January that over 430,000 people attended Chinook Blast in 2024, bringing a $15 million boost to the city’s economy.
More information on Chinook Blast events can be found online.
