Calgary Transit expands On Demand project to new neighbourhoods

No more long walks for some Calgary Transit users living in new communities thanks to an update to the On Demand service starting Sunday.

Calgary Transit says On Demand allows customers to book a trip with a vehicle between their community and nearby amenities or Transit hubs, connecting them to the larger Transit network.

Sharon Fleming, director of Calgary Transit said that the neighbourhoods included are Ambleton, Sage Hill, Seaton, Pinecreek, Yorkville, Glacier Ridge, Rangeview, Riccardo Ranch, and Belmont.

A welcome change for some Calgarians who say they have to walk “20 minutes, 30 minutes sometimes,” to catch the bus from their new communities.

“That would be great, because as you can see I have my wagon and co and it’s quite the mission,” one woman with her family told CityNews.

“That would be a great help for us if we will get this kind of facility in this area,” another resident said.

As for how long the service takes, Fleming says the wait time is much shorter.

“Ideally the wait time is up to 15 minutes, so it’s actually a great level of service,” she said.

Faster than some scheduled buses. Rides are booked through the new Calgary Transit On Demand App. It can be used to book rides and select those who are travelling with you.

Customers will be picked up in vehicles, with some being wheelchair accessible. According to Calgary Transit, there might be a small walk to the driver and vehicle, “but it helps to cut down on detours and make your journey faster.”

“We’re really looking forward to seeing all of you on board and getting you to where you need to go, as efficiently as possible,” Fleming said.
