Calgary Public Library to reopen all its branches after data breach

Calgary’s public libraries are slated to reopen for regular hours with modified service on Wednesday after a cybersecurity breach forced all locations to close for days.

The Calgary Public Library (CPL) said Monday that patrons will have access to library spaces and services that “don’t require technology” on Oct. 16.

Those services include limited access to collection browsing, up to 10 material check-out and hold pick-ups per card, and access to study areas and drop-in meeting room access with limited availability.

CPL says programs and events that don’t require technology, like Family Storytime, Baby Rhyme Time, and Reading Buddies, will also be available.

Unavailable services include book returns, technology and digital services including the Digital Library and eResources, online room booking and program registration, and programs and events that require technology — including all virtual programming.

The library says due dates for all borrowed materials will be extended until further notice.

While CPL says it continues to experience a significant service disruption following the breach, crews are investigating the issue.

The closure of all branches due to the cybersecurity breach was shared on the CPL website and its social media on Friday, Oct. 11.

CPL says updates will be posted on its website when they are available.
