Calgary man wanted on charges connected to theft of wire that left hundreds without phone, internet

Calgary police are asking for help from the public to find a man charged with stealing telecommunication wire last December, leaving more than 2,000 southeast Calgary residents without phone or Internet service.

On Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, police believe three people entered multiple manholes near Glenmore Trail SE and stole critical infrastructure wire.

As a result, 2,056 citizens in the area were left without access to phone or internet service, and around $276,000 in property damage was done.

A man and a woman were arrested about a month later, after police searched a home on 37 Street SW and found evidence consistent with the theft and resale of copper wire.

Now, 39-year-old Shawn James Foley is wanted on one warrant for theft over $5,000.

He is described as 5’6″ tall and approximately 156 pounds, with a medium build, brown hair, and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about Foley’s whereabouts is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
