The province is rescinding a King’s counsel (KC) designation that was given to a Calgary lawyer earlier this year after an email he sent to colleagues was made public last week.
The title recognizes lawyers who make exceptional contributions to law, or the general public, in their careers and has been stripped from Rob Rakochey, who practiced law for 34 years.
He was awarded the designation in March.
The email Rakochey sent to dozens of colleagues about his upcoming annual golf tournament was made public by CBC last week. In the 2,000 word message, he makes several misogynistic comments and appears to mock transgender people.
In part of the email, which was inviting colleagues to his annual golf tournament in B.C., he wrote that he “[longed] for the day that we can award the trophy to a person with a vagina.”
In another part, Rakochey tells attendees to leave their female partners at home, using a demeaning term to refer to them, because there is “enough talent in town.”
He subsequently resigned from his firm, Field Law, in the wake of the email being made public.
