Calgary husband and wife charged in vehicle re-vinning scheme

A Calgary husband and wife have been arrested and charged in a complex scheme of re-vinning stolen vehicles.

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s (ALERT) Auto Crimes unit charged the pair on Sept. 29 and recovered three stolen vehicles worth an estimated $380,000.

ALERT says the stolen vehicles included two high-end trucks and a motorhome.

Police say the two suspects re-vinned and fraudulently registered stolen vehicles by exploiting the vehicle registration process.

Service Alberta has been notified and is helping with the investigation.

“By exploiting the system, these suspects were essentially hiding in plain sight. Organized and complex auto crimes such as these drive up insurance premiums for all Albertans,” said Staff Sgt. Gordon MacDonald, ALERT.

The vehicles were previously reported stolen from Cochrane, Calgary, and Tsuut’ina Nation.

Investigators learned about the case after an innoncent third-party was contacted about driving offences committed in a vehicle fraudulently registered under their name.

Darko Kolundzic, 36, and Viviana Tello, 39, have each been charged with possession of property obtained by crime, uttering a forged document, and fraud.
