Calgary firefighters douse intense house fire in Marlborough

Calgary fire crews evacuated several residents while extinguishing intense flames consuming a home in the Marlborough community Saturday.

A 911 call to firefighters came in reporting a house fire on the 4700 block of Memorial Drive at around 11:20 p.m.

Upon encountering the scene overtaking the residence, crews met with eight residents and their pets who evacuated from the house safely. They were all accounted for and no other residents were found.

Firefighters wasted no time deploying large-volume hose streams from outside the structure.

The large fire was being fed by a heat-damaged natural gas meter, which was kept under control by firefighters outside.

Overhead powerlines sustained damage from the fire, prompting the involvement of utility companies ATCO Gas and Enmax Electric to secure the affected utilities.

Traffic on Memorial Drive was slowed due to fire trucks and other emergency vehicles in the area.

Firefighters say the cause is currently under investigation.
