Calgary fire crews are responding to a fire at a downtown apartment building Monday afternoon.
Spokesperson Carol Henke tells 660 NewsRadio smoke was reported at 831 6 Avenue just before noon.
When crews arrived, they found smoke on multiple floors. Henke explains the smoke was coming from a unit on the 23rd floor.
The flames were quickly extinguished, and crews began searching for residents.
Henke says some residents weren’t able to leave the building as the elevators were down, and were forced to shelter in place. Some of the building’s residents also had mobility issues and weren’t able to quickly and effectively evacuate.
One person was looked at by paramedics, according to Henke. More residents are expected to need evaluation.
ATCO and Enmax are at the scene, as is a fire investigator.
This is a developing story.
