ASIRT looking for witnesses in police shooting of man who robbed NW Calgary liquor store

Alberta’s police watchdog is asking for witnesses as they investigate the shooting of a robbery suspect in northwest Calgary.

Calgary police say officers received a call about an attempted robbery at Ace Liquor along 16 Avenue NW at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 18.

A suspect was alleged to have stolen a bottle of vodka and then smashed through a door with a hammer and went to a nearby park, according to ASIRT.

Officers arrived at the park and were told by bystanders that the suspect had a knife. The man allegedly stood up holding the knife and did not drop it when asked to by police.

ASIRT says a female officer shot at the man twice. He was hit in the leg and fell to the ground. The responding officers provided first aid and paramedics arrived to take the suspect to hospital around 2:42 p.m.

The man was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The officers had body worn cameras and cameras on their police vehicle that captured the incident,” reads a release from ASIRT. “ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force.”

The watchdog is asking for anyone who saw the interaction between police and the man, including a female who was believe to be in the park at the time, to contact them at 403-592-4306.
