More drama in Ottawa this week – federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh penned a letter Friday morning saying he and his party will no longer support the minority Liberals in a confidence vote.
That could mean an election sooner than later, and the riding of Edmonton Centre could be up for grabs.
“Gosh there’s just so much chaos. I just find it really disappointing,” said one Edmontonian CityNews spoke to.
In a publicly posted letter, Singh said his party will no longer support the liberals in the House of Commons.
His letter said in part “We will put forward a clear motion of non-confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons.”

This follows the resignation of former finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland earlier this week.
The House of Commons isn’t scheduled to sit until the end of January — but with the Liberal-NDP partnership ending — that means an election could be coming much sooner than fall 2025, and Albertans in Edmonton and Calgary are ready to head to the polls.
“I think something needs to happen, I’m not sure what that is. But an election might be just exactly what does need to happen,” said an Edmontonian.
Said someone from Calgary, “I think he (Justin Trudeau) was just getting unpopular anyway, so I’m not surprised, absolutely, absolutely, get him out of there.”
The riding of Edmonton Centre — currently held by former Liberal cabinet minister Randy Boissonault is up for grabs whenever the next election is called.
Political pollster 338 currently currently has the conservatives with a 99 per cent chance of winning the riding. The riding will be contested by NDP candidate and former Edmonton Public School Board Chair Trisha Estabrooks .
Estabrooks declined to comment Friday, referring CityNews to Singh’s letter.
Neither the conservative nominee for the riding Sayid Ahmed or the Edmonton Centre Conservative Association responded at this time.
In the meantime, Albertans are waiting until an election is called.
“I think everybody, they’re finally tired of Trudeau,” said an Edmontonian. “The liberals aren’t getting back in, he’s screwed us up too much this time.”
