Airdrie RCMP is warning the public about a blackmail scam that demands Bitcoin in exchange for the supposed private information of victims.
Mounties say they are investigating six instances of Airdrie residents receiving scam Bitcoin emails, with the earliest happening on Sept. 16.
The emails ask for personal information, which can include a photo of their home, address, and phone number. Then, the scam will state it has the user’s browsing information and access to their computers and smartphones, along with screenshots of “footage of the individuals doing private things in their bedroom.”
Police say the scam makes a request of US$2,000 in Bitcoin to wipe out the information.
“RCMP are advising citizens that this is a scam. Please DO NOT send any money to anyone unless you know it is a legitimate company,” a news release reads.
Police are asking anyone with any information about the scam to contact Airdrie RCMP at 403-945-7200 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
