Edmonton police say two people have been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a security guard early Friday morning.
Police responded to an apartment complex near 107 Avenue and 106 Street after receiving reports that gunshots could be heard and a security guard was found lying on the ground.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 20-year-old security guard in a stairwell and provided first aid until paramedics arrived. EMS took the security guard to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Saturday afternoon, police identified the security guard as Harshandeep Singh. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 9.
“The EPS doesn’t typically release the name of a deceased individual unless the death has been confirmed to be a homicide,” said EPS Homicide Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey. “However, in this instance, we are releasing his name for an investigative purpose and in an effort to alleviate public safety concerns in relation to Mr. Singh’s unfortunate death.”
Police have since charged 30-year-old Evan Rain and 30-year-old Judith Saulteaux with first-degree murder.
Investigators don’t believe anyone else was involved in Singh’s death, and they note they were able to recover a weapon when taking Rain and Saulteaux into custody.
Anyone with information about Singh’s death is asked to contact investigators at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
