18-year-old faces second-degree murder charge in Red Deer stabbing incident

Mounties in Red Deer have arrested an 18-year-old accused of second-degree murder in an apparent stabbing on Saturday.

Police say reports about a man standing at the corner of 49 Avenue and 53 Street in Red Deer with injuries “consistent with a bladed weapon” came in at around 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 28.

The victim, 43-year-old Red Deer man Anthony Spiller, received medical treatment but died on the scene.

Heavy police presence was in the area for several hours, but officers said there was no ongoing risk to the public.

They arrested 18-year-old River Roan, who was a short distance away. He faces second-degree murder charges.

He is expected to appear in court on Jan. 2, 2025.
