Calgary police are investigating a crash that killed one person and seriously injured another in the city’s southeast Sunday.
Investigators say around noon on Sept. 8, a black 2017 Toyota Rav 4, driven by a 35-year-old man with a 33-year-old woman as a passenger, was going southbound approaching the 3400 block of Highfield Road SE.
As the vehicle continued south, the road curved and the vehicle crossed onto the west shoulder and went into a large gravel parking area, police explain.
The vehicle continued straight, travelling on the gravel, before crossing into the rough vegetation area west of the road.
Police say the Toyota hit a large metal pole which was part of an advertising installation. The impact caused the vehicle to rotate around the pole before stopping on its roof.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was taken to hospital in serious condition.
An investigation into the crash continues and police are asking anyone who may have saw the collision or who may have dashcam footage of the incident to contact police at 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
Police say alcohol, drugs, and speed aren’t considered to be factors.
