Tornado warning issued for parts of central Alberta including Lacombe, Rimbey

Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that could produce a tornado in central Alberta..

An Alberta Emergency Alert notifying a critical tornado warning was issued for several communities in the region Wednesday evening.

The alert says “extra care and attention” should be exercised in and around communities such as Rimbey, Crestomere, Eckville and Lacombe, with 12 total affected areas listed.

The warning, issued at 7:12 p.m. MT, noted damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

“Tornado warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing tornadoes,” reads Environment Canada’s website.

Residents are advised to take cover if threatening weather approaches, or if they see a funnel cloud or swirling debris.

The agency recommends going indoors and staying on the lowest floor, away from outside walls or windows.
