Police shooting in northwest Calgary prompts ASIRT investigation

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investing after an officer responding to an attempted liquor store robbery shot a suspect in northwest Calgary on Sunday.

The Calgary Police Service says the suspect had a weapon.

At around 2:30 p.m., police responded to a call about an attempted robbery at Ace Liquor in a Montgomery shopping plaza.

When officers arrived, they found an armed suspect a short distance away in Montgomery Town Square, a park beside the shopping plaza, according to CPS.

Police say demands to drop the weapon were not followed, leading to an officer firing their gun.

“The suspect was shot and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” reads a statement from the police service.

There were no injuries to CPS members or the public, according to police.

ASIRT, a provincial agency, investigates incidents where death or serious injury may have been caused by police. It also investigates serious allegations of police misconduct.
