Police looking to speak with possible witnesses of fatal drive-by shooting

Calgary police are looking to speak with the drivers of three vehicles who were near the vehicle of 19-year-old Jordan Leinen when she was killed in a drive-by shooting on a Deerfoot Trail overpass Saturday.

Investigators say the drivers of a black four-door sedan, a white pickup truck and a white SUV that were in the area could have important information related to the investigation.

Officers previously said the shooting happened at 5:20 p.m. on July 20. However, new evidence suggests it happened between 5:45 and 5:50 p.m. on the northbound off-ramp from Deerfoot Trail to 32nd Avenue N.E.

Police are also asking for dashcam footage from anyone driving near the 32nd Avenue and Deerfoot Trail interchange, including eastbound and westbound 32nd Avenue approaching and crossing the bridge over the Deerfoot, the southbound off-ramp from 32nd Avenue to Deerfoot, and southbound Deerfoot approaching and near the 32nd Avenue exit.

Police say Leinen was not the intended target of the shooting, and a 17-year-old male injured in the same vehicle was likely the intended victim.

Investigators previously said the male was the driver and Leinen was the passenger. The 17-year-old was recovering and in stable condition, but due to his age, police couldn’t provide further information.

Police are asking for anyone with information about the incident, or security camera or dashcam footage of the shooting, to contact them. Information can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers online or by calling 1-800-222-8477.

This was Calgary’s 10th homicide of 2024.
