City to give update on schedule for lifting water restrictions

City officials are expected to have a decision on Monday about whether ongoing water restrictions in Calgary can be loosened further.

  • Mayor Jyoti Gondek is set to give an update on the situation at 9:30 a.m. Watch that live here.

The city remains under Stage 3 outdoor water use restrictions, meaning that Calgarians can water their gardens and outdoor plants, but only using handheld containers or buckets.

The flow through the pipe that replaced the feeder main that broke June 5 on 16th Avenue N.W. remains at 55 per cent of its capacity.

City officials say that although the pipe is full of water, that water is moving at a little more than half of its normal speed.

This keeps the pressure low and reduces stress on the pipe.

The city plans to turn on additional pumps at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant. After analyzing the information, they will decide whether increasing the flow is possible now, or whether it is prudent to stay in Stage 3 water restrictions for a longer period of time.
