City set to provide an update on Calgary’s water system

City of Calgary officials are set to provide another update Tuesday afternoon on the ongoing water supply issues triggered by a rupture in the Bearspaw south feeder main on June 5.

For now, Calgary remains under Stage 2 outdoor water restrictions.

On Monday, city officials said recent issues with intake pumps at both the Bearspaw and Glenmore water treatment plants meant the city had to delay a move down to Stage 1 outdoor water restrictions.

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek said things appeared to be running smoothly for the city’s water system until Sunday night, which is when the minor water intake pump issues occurred due to prolonged hot weather.

According to the city’s website, maintenance work on the pumps is underway.

“While the issue with the pumps is not related to the feeder main, it does impact how much water we can flow from the two water treatment plants through the city’s water distribution system,” reads the website.

The city says it will reassess the move down to Stage 1 restrictions throughout this week.

Under Stage 2 outdoor water restrictions, residents can water gardens and lawns, though with some limitations. Residents using sprinklers must follow a watering schedule. Full details on the city’s guidelines for outdoor watering can be found here

Under Stage 1 restrictions, those limitations would be loosened slightly.

Water is currently flowing through the feeder main pipe at 70 per cent of its maximum capacity, according to the city.
