The Calgary Stampede announced Friday that Alberta-born actor Owen Crow Shoe has been selected as this year’s Stampede parade marshal.
Crow Shoe, a member of the Piikani Nation and Blood Tribe of the Blackfoot Confederacy, started his acting career in the Oscar-nominated film The Revenant, where he was a stunt rider.
He has since had acting roles around the world — and this year he co-stars with 2022 Parade Marshal Kevin Costner in the movie Horizon: An American Saga — but Crow Shoe says he’s looking forward to getting back to his roots by helping kick off the Stampede, an event his family has been part of since 1985.
“I grew up at the Calgary Stampede,” he said.
“I’m fortunate to have made so many memories and life-long friendships at the Calgary Stampede and I look forward to making so many more along the Parade route this year.”
Will Osler, president and chair of the Calgary Stampede board of directors, said they are proud to have a role model like Crow Shoe lead the parade.
“His commitment to celebrating and sharing his culture, both on and off the screen, is inspiring,” he said.
Crow Shoe will also serve as master of ceremonies for the 2024 Calgary Stampede Powwow on July 7 and 8 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
