Drowning death of 5-year-old girl on Wabumun Lake a criminal investigation: RCMP

RCMP now say the drowning death of a five-year-old girl near Edmonton over the long weekend is a criminal investigation.

Mounties from Parkland County responded to a report that a watercraft had capsized on Wabamun Lake — roughly 50km west of Edmonton — around 2:50 p.m. on Sunday.

Later that evening, Mounties confirmed they had found two people, and recovered the body of a 5-year-old girl, who was confirmed dead by EMS and STARS after being pulled from the lake.

In an update Thursday, RCMP say through their investigation they’ve learned that the boat did not capsize and they are treating the death as a criminal investigation.
