Letters, Oct. 13, 2024: ‘Timely message for Thanksgiving’

Article content

As a teenager, I watched my mother deteriorate from MS and eventually in a wheelchair. My father cared for her with so much love it’s hard to describe. He was a very proud man and wouldn’t accept outside help or a turkey, even though we had none. After her passing at age 42 I’d hear him crying, missing her so much. Now when I eat turkey I think of my mom’s suffering but also my dad’s love for her. This Thanksgiving, please give thanks for family and friends that are a big part of your life.

PETER J. MIDDLEMORE Sr.

(Thank-you, Peter, for such a timely and touching reminder.)

Support the blue

Our police officers have a very dangerous job. Their families are always afraid they will be killed while on the job. With all the mental illnesses, drug use, violent criminals, we are damn lucky we still have the police willing to do the job. We need to support our police force. If you have a family with a dangerous drug addiction or mental illness, take care of them and don’t let them wander the streets.

IVY GRAY

(Our police can certainly use all the support they can get.)

Smart moves

Re “Trudeau should listen to Canucks and trim bureaucracy” (Grady Munro and Jake Fuss, Oct. 3): The Liberal response will as usual be to blame Conservatives as uncaring if they engage in massive firings. If the Conservatives are smart they’ll avoid that pitfall and reduce the numbers by freezing jobs that become vacant. Such a strategy will require some reassignments to protect those positions deemed to be essential. This approach will take longer but be less disruptive since no one loses their job. In addition, the issue of severance becomes moot.

DOUG APPT

(The Conservatives are going to act strategically but no matter what, the public service will rebel against them)

Trump nonsense

Sad will be the result if Donald Trump wins the next American presidential election in November. This pretender and contender at the same time gets off on threatening everyone, everywhere and every day. The NAFTA agreement, the Donald will just tear it up. Any country importing anything into Trump’s delusional tropical island U.S.A. will be subject to a 10% tariff. This nonsense has to be stopped before his insanity could begin again on Nov. 5. All Americans, it’s up to you to vote.

DARYL COTE

(His base is certainly faithful, no matter what he says or does.)
