Northern lights could brighten night sky this weekend after solar storms

Solar storms could lead to some spectacular displays in the night sky this weekend.

660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says the northern lights may be visible in Calgary after the sun shot out two strong solar flares earlier this week, including one on Thursday that was the biggest since 2017.

He says the effect means a good chance the natural light display is visible in the sky on Friday.

“There’s some potential for elevated aurora, which might mean looking to the north, there’s also a chance we end up with a full sky aurora, horizon to horizon,” says Stanfield.

When one of these solar storms passes by earth, it can spark a disturbance in the magnetic field ,which typically results in bright displays of the northern lights across Canada and the northern U.S.

Conditions are expected to be mostly clear in Calgary.

Forecasters are also monitoring for possible disruptions to power and communications.
