It’s common to see kitchen islands with spots for two or three people to sit and snack. But in some homes, the island takes that gathering experience further.
One example is the Macleod by Cedarglen Homes. Currently displayed as a show home in the north Calgary community of Livingston, this model ranges from 2,143 to 2,642 square feet.
Including floor plan options, it is presented with five bedrooms above grade.
Not only is the island spacious, but it provides seating for five people — three people on the long side and two people on an end.
This creates a table-like effect, where it’s easier for people seated at the island to make eye contact while in conversation.
It’s easy to imagine hosting a get-together in this home, where the adults are in the dining area and the island is used as the so-called kids’ table.

In the show home, the kitchen is demonstrated with a table for six. However, there is room for something larger when the occasion calls for it.
The dining area backs onto a row of tall-rear windows and a glass door on the rear-facing wall, and the island sides onto this wall. This showers both spaces with a high volume of sunshine.
Also seen in the show home is a secondary kitchen that attaches to the primary cooking space. This is commonly known as a spice or working kitchen. Its purpose is to contain strong scents created through cooking certain cuisines.
The working kitchen is equipped with an oven and hoodfan, sink, microwave and shelves.
As part of an open-concept design, the primary kitchen faces a great room, which features a stylish elongated fireplace. This orientation makes it easy for someone in the kitchen to maintain eye contact and therefore conversation with another person in the great room.
Typically, the front stretch of the main floor includes a flex room that some may chose to use a home office. But there is an option to convert this flex room into a main floor bedroom.

Multi-generational households will find this beneficial, allowing seniors living in the home that ability to avoid regular use of stairs. This bedroom is attached to a full bathroom with an elegant tile shower.
Other options for this floor plan include a tandem garage, side entry and secondary suite in the basement.
The side entry option pairs nicely with the secondary suite. If the homeowner decides to use this suite for a rental tenant, the side entrance gives them direct access to the basement.
On the second level, three secondary bedrooms are on one end, and the primary bedroom is on the other. These segments are divided by a welcoming central bonus room.
Each of these bedrooms is shown with a walk-in closet. For the children of the family, this helps accommodate their needs through their teenage years.
In the primary bedroom, the closet is large enough to function as a dressing room.
Another high point of this sleep space is its luxurious ensuite. There’s a substantial glass shower with full-height tile and free-standing tub in front of an eye-catching accent wall featuring a chevron pattern.
