City crews, police removing large tunnel encampment found near Stampede Park

Crews have been working to remove an intricate tunnel encampment that was dug into the side of a hill near Calgary’s Stampede Park.

City workers could be seen digging up dirt and trees along 25 Avenue SE, between Macleod Trail and Spiller Road, throughout most of the day Thursday. Police and bylaw officers were also at the site.

The tunnel encampment constructed on the south side of 25 Avenue SE appears to be several feet deep and was supported with lumber.

Calgary police tell CityNews that “remediation is occurring to a sensitive area of the park” and say they will have more information next week.

Police are advising the public to avoid the area and give crews room to work.

Lack of affordable housing has remained a hot topic in Calgary with the city recently granting a temporary exemption for residents living in motorhomes on a northeast road.
