Suspect in violent carjacking of mom, son was released from custody hours earlier: Calgary police

A Calgary man charged in connection with a violent carjacking earlier this month was released from custody the same day as the incident.

Calgary police say a woman and her son were leaving a kids camp near Macleod Trail and Southland Drive on Sept. 8 when a stranger tried to steal her vehicle.

It is alleged the pair were getting into the woman’s 2007 Kia Rio when the woman was physically attacked several times by the suspect.

Bystanders came to help after being alerted by the victim’s son, but the suspect was able to get away with the vehicle, according to police.

The victim called police and investigators were able to identify the suspect as a man who was released from custody earlier the same day.

On Sept. 13, officers were called to the area of Bearspaw Dam Road and 85 Street NW for reports of a car prowler in the area. Police arrested a man who turned out to be the same suspect from the carjacking.

Calgary resident Wayne Aaron Canning, 43, has been charged with robbery, mischief to property, theft, and several breaches of a release order. He will remain in custody until his next court date later this month.

Investigators are still searching for the vehicle taken during the carjacking. It is described as a silver, four-door 2007 Kia Rio with the Alberta license plate CRC 7920.

“The victim and her son were innocently going about their day when they were robbed of their only mode of transportation,” says CPS acting Insp. Kurt Jacobs. “This individual was released from custody and within 16 hours was reoffending and breaching his release conditions.”
