Body discovered in roadside fire east of Calgary

RCMP are investigating after a roadside fire east of Calgary early Wednesday morning led to the discovery of a body.

Police say just after 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 11, a woman was driving on Township Road 233 near Highway 791 in Rocky View County, when she came across a fire on the side of the road.

“She quickly ran home to grab her son and some water and came to extinguish the fire,” explained Cpl. Gina Slaney with Alberta RCMP. “When it was out her and her son discovered a deceased person.”

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

Police are looking for anyone who may have dash cam footage and was in the area between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.

RCMP also want to talk to anyone with dash cam footage who was driving west or esat between those times on Highway 560, west of the Glenmore Trail and Stoney Trail overpass.

Investigators believe this attack was targeted and don’t think there is any danger to the public.

RCMP say there is a ‘significant’ amount of resources dedicated to apprehending the people responsible for the crime, but ask that the public remain vigilant.

Any suspicious activity or tips should be submitted to Strathmore RCMP or CrimeStoppers.
