For some households, meal preparation necessities extend beyond the traditional kitchen.

While an open-concept cooking space boast a myriad of benefits, such as providing a more welcoming, social environment, in some cases, there’s more to consider.

In that vein, the Collingwood by Excel Homes may provide a solution. This 2,227-square-foot front-drive single-family model is now presented as a show home in the new northwest Calgary community of Carrington South.

Its primary kitchen is L-shaped, spacious and bright. The island, which seats at least four people beneath stylish pendant light, is an optimal spot for guests to gather and chat.

There are substantial stretches of counter space, a handy feature for spreading out and working with ingredients. Its combination of eye-catching cabinets, stainless steel appliances and glossy tile backsplash make it a visual treat.

But when the stove turns on, it may not be in this space. Across from the conventional kitchen is a secondary cooking area, commonly dubbed a spice kitchen.

It is equipped with an oven, cabinets, small counter, a sink and ventilation. Rather than cooking-related scents lingering and drifting to other ends of the main level, they are contained because this kitchen can be closed off.

That closed-off function is also useful for hiding messes related to meal preparation when guests are over.

Additionally, for large holiday meals, sometimes it’s just nice heaving two ovens at the ready.

On the front-facing kitchen wall, a square-shaped cutout helps spread natural light. A significant source of that sunshine come from a large window and sliding glass doors along the back of he main floor.

This is where the dining area and great room are located as part of an open-concept design. In the show home, an accent wall is created through use of eye-catching wall paper in the dining area, setting this space apart.

Many people spend at least a segment of their work week from home. To accommodate this need, there’s an eight foot eight inch by 11-foot  six-inch flex room that can function as a home office. It is located near the front entrance, making it easy to greet clients or co-workers and escort them into the office without needing to go through the more personal ends of the home.

On the second level, everything revolves around a generously sized bonus room. In addition to footprint, the gathering space impresses with its soaring vaulted ceiling.

All above-grade bedrooms in this home are equipped with a walk-in closet. One of the two secondary bedrooms provides direct access to a full bathroom, which is directly across the hallway from the other bedroom.

This bathroom features a vanity with two sinks beneath a full-width mirror.

The primary bedroom measures 12 feet 11 inches by 12 feet four inches and achieves elevated visual interest through a tray-style ceiling design.

Its ensuite is upscale and bright, starring a shower with full-height tile and a stylish free-standing tub beneath a window.

The show home demonstrates a developed basement. Ideal for movie nights, it features a rec area with a walk-up bar and fridge. There are also two bedrooms and a full bathroom.

Supporting use of these bedrooms for a rental tenant, the show home is presented with a side entrance, allowing direct access to stairs to the basement. This lets the renter access their end of home without needing to walk through the main level.
