Calgary fire crews plugged an ammonia leak at a recreational centre in the Country Hills area in the city’s northeast Sunday.
The fire department received multiple calls just before 3 p.m. regarding the alarm and the smell of ammonia at the Vivo for Healthier Generations recreational centre.
CFD Battalion Chief Scott Cowen tells CityNews crews assisted with the evacuation, secured the building, and then sent hazmat crews in who determined there was an ammonia leak inside the building.
“They’ve secured that section of the building and are ventilating the rest of the building. Our priority is to get people back in the building so they can get their belongings and change and get back out,” he said.
Once the patrons and staff were cared for, CFD says crews worked with the building operators and contractors to fix the issue.
They add that no injuries were reported by staff or patrons.
Calgary police were also on hand blocking off roads in the area. A small fire crew remained on scene until 6 p.m. as repairs were made.
