Potential spring snow on the way for Calgary

The sun has been giving Calgarians a taste of spring this weekend, but forecasters are calling for a chance of snow on Monday and Tuesday.

Calgarians saw highs in the teens for the weekend, with a high of 17 C on Saturday and a high reaching 19 C on Sunday.

Some residents told CityNews on Friday that they planned on enjoying the outdoors and the mountains, and with many patios opening up, grabbing a drink and chatting with friends.

Some even said they aimed to catch up on gardening, but there’s a reason they say don’t start planting that garden until the May long weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says there is a 60 per cent chance for flurries on Monday going into Tuesday.

Daytime highs on both days will be above 0 C, and even the overnight lows are barely into the minuses, but it could potentially cause some issues for drivers.

ECCC’s Justin Shelley tells CityNews anything can happen this time of year.

“We can have all four seasons in one,” he said.

“Sometimes we get some of these more dynamic systems move across the prairies, which can produce … rainfall in sort of the warm side of the system, sometimes thunderstorms associated with that, and then on the backside of that system, you still have enough cold air moving in from the north that allows for these larger snowfall events to occur.”

He says the reduced temperatures will “likely” last into the end of the week, but much of the snow isn’t expected to last.

Despite this, Shelley says motorists should still be prepared for changing conditions.
