Number of Jasper wildfire evacuees registered in Calgary nearly doubled overnight

The number of Jasper wildfire evacuees registered in Calgary nearly doubled in the last 24 hours.

City officials say as of Friday morning, 960 evacuees had registered in Calgary. On Thursday morning, just 465 people had registered at the city’s reception centre at the Shouldice Arena at 1515 Home Road NW.

Evacuees are still encouraged to register with the province.

However, those in need of accommodations can register at the Calgary Reception Centre.

The reception centre will continue to be open 24/7 until Monday.

Calgarians looking for a way to lend a hand are asked not to bring donations to the reception centre at Shouldice Arena, as it is not set up for that. Instead, they are asked to check the province’s website for a list of charitable organizations or contact emergencysupportoffers@gov.ab.ca
