One day after Calgary’s mayor issued an urgent call for residents to slash their water consumption, usage levels returned to a sustainable level on Friday.
During her regular livestream update Saturday morning, Jyoti Gonek said Calgarians had heeded the call from city officials, dropping consumption levels on Friday to 460 million litres.
The mayor and city officials said the water usage a day earlier had increased to its highest level since the crisis began, spiking to 500 million litres on Thursday.
That’s a level that Calgary Emergency Management Agency Chief Sue Henry said put the city in a “vulnerable state.”
Also on Saturday morning, Gondek said city workers have began pushing water through the feeder main to flush the line, a necessary step before service can be restored.
City officials will provide another water main repair update Saturday at 2 p.m. Watch it live here or on the CBC Alberta YouTube page.
