Alberta’s police watchdog is expected to release its findings Friday on the death of a South Sudanese man at the hands of Calgary Police more than two years ago.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says 41-year-old Latjor Tuel was tasered and hit with ‘less-lethal’ baton rounds on Feb. 19, 2022, after police were called for reports of an assault in Forest Lawn.
Within minutes of arriving on scene, the man was fatally shot by police.
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) said at the time they tried to resolve the crisis before any shots were fired.
Family and friends disagreed, saying Tuel was in mental distress and had a history of trauma as a refugee from South Sudan.
Tuel’s death sparked rallies for justice across the city and generated discussion about CPS’ de-escalation protocols.
This is a developing story.
