Out of control grass fire west of Calgary forces evacuations in Springbank

Mounties are warning of some evacuations west of Calgary due to an out of control grass fire.

Rocky View County Fire Services and the RCMP responded to the fire that broke out east of Springbank Airport before 6 p.m. Wednesday near Spring Bank Heights Drive and Spring Bank Heights Way.

Photos posted to social media show smoke filling the air west of the city.

A spokesperson for Rocky View County says affected residents are being asked to evacuate to Springbank Park For All Seasons

Cochrane RCMP warn there may be more evacuations to come so residents in the area “are being asked to prepare to leave.”

Motorists are also being asked to avoid the area.

A fire ban is in place in Calgary and some surrounding areas due to a critical water main break that has led to city-wide water restrictions. Rocky View County has confirmed it is not impacted by the water issues in the city.
