Calgary MP aims to stop deportation of Humboldt Broncos bus crash driver

Calgary Liberal MP George Chahal is looking to gain support from his colleagues, in an attempt to try and stop the deportation of the driver behind the wheel of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

“He is remorseful, he’s asked for forgiveness and he’s served his time,” Chahal told CityNews. “I’m hoping that all Canadians and all of the families can forgive him.”

Chahal had the chance to meet with Sidhu, his wife, and their child. He says if Sidhu is deported, it would have serious implications for the family.

“His wife is a Canadian citizen, a registered nurse, and their young child has significant health care issues — heart and lung which requires neonatal care,” the MP said.

Sidhu has taken full responsibility for the crash that killed 16 people and injured 13 others. However, because he committed a serious crime and is not a Canadian citizen, he is not allowed in the country.

“I think this is an opportunity for us to reflect as a country and that we do believe in compassion and we give this man an opportunity to provide for his family,” Chahal said.

The Liberal MP says he plans on travelling across Canada in an effort to generate support for Sidhu.

But Chahal admits, he has received mixed reaction.

“Many have told me that he has served his time and he should be here with his family, but there are many others who believe that the system we have in place, we should abide by that,” he said.

Sidhu arrived in Canada from India in 2014.

In 2019, He pleaded guilty to over two-dozen dangerous driving offences and was handed an eight year sentence. He was granted full parole last year.
