Alberta’s liquor regulator is relaxing some rules for bars, restaurants, and lounges during next month’s Calgary Stampede.
From July 5 to 14, City of Calgary restaurants, arenas, theatres, recreational facilities, and private, nonprofit facilities, will be able to start serving alcohol at 8 a.m., according to the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) says.
On Parade Day, July 5, businesses holding liquor licenses along the route will be able to pour a cold one starting at 7 a.m.
Some private events that get their own prior approval can start serving at 6:30 a.m. during Stampede.
Closing hours for liquor service aren’t changing, the AGLC adds, and all other rules regarding liquor service are still in effect.
AGLC says licensees are expected to continue to serve liquor in a socially responsible way to ensure patrons’ safety during the special hours.
Any group wishing to hold a special event are required to apply for a liquor license a minimum of four to six weeks ahead of the event and hours for special events are determined on a case-by-case basis.
AGLC regularly considers early service hours for major international sporting events or for major community events like the Stampede.
