Cold weather set to return to Calgary

January has been warmer than usual, but February is forecast to return to chilly winter temperatures.

The cool down starts Friday, and many areas of the city woke up to freezing fog.

“The first week of [February] is going to be at or below seasonal all the way to the end of the week,” said 660 NewsRadio meteorologist Michael Kuss. “This afternoon is the warmest of a bunch.”

Environment Canada is forecasting a 30 per cent chance of flurries Friday morning, before the clouds roll in. The high is -2 C but it’ll likely feel more like -12 C with the wind chill.

It will only get colder from there, the weather agency says.

Snow is also expected Saturday morning, followed by an afternoon temperature of -16 C that will feel like -25 C with the wind chill.

Sunday is expected to be the coldest of the stretch — Environment Canada is forecasted a 60 per cent chance of snow with a high of -21 C and a low of -27 C.

The new week will bring a warm-up, but not by much. Monday’s high is -21 C and the low is -24 C, Tuesday will see a high of -13 C and a low of -16 C, and Wednesday is forecast to have a high of -5 C and a low of -13 C.

Environment Canada says the average high for this time of year is -1 C and the average low is -13 C.
