Award-winning comedy magician Lucy Darling returns for limited Calgary shows

Lucy Darling is back in Calgary with her show ‘Indulgence’ at One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo.

The run of the show is a limited one, with performances only from Jan. 28-30.

But, there is a special VIP component to the show as well for those that would like a closer look at the magic of Lucy.

For the uninitiated, Lucy Darling is a femme-fatale, hyper feminine, drag queen-type character who speaks with a trans-Atlantic lilt to her voice. She wears sexy, but not too revealing, cocktail dresses and has a big red beehive.

The show is a combination of stand up comedy, improvisation, and magic.

Calgary-based performer and creator Carissa Hendrix said the magic is the most challenging part for her, partly because magic is originally not designed for female performers.

“Magic is so much harder than people realize,” she said. “Magic is an art form that relies on a very deep understanding of what is normal.”

Hendrix points out that converting traditional tricks that rely on the male figure, wardrobe, and accessories into the hyperfeminine grand dame caricature of Lucy skews the idea of normal even further.

Hendrix said as a performer she notices some people lean more into the comedy, some people lean more into the magic, depending on how comfortable they are with uncertainty.

“Most people who are very comfortable with uncertainty really dig the show,” she added.

Hendrix says it all depends on what kind of discomfort you are okay with, but either way there is something for you.
