Dozens displaced in significant condo fire in SW Bridlewood

Significant flames and smoke spreading through a four-storey condominium in the southwest Bridlewood area displaced dozens of people Sunday.

Crews say they arrived just after 5 a.m. and called a second alarm for the fire at a block in the Point of View condominium on 162 Ave at 24 Street SW.

Along with noticing smoke and flames billowing from the building, firefighters say there was significant fire damage to the fourth floor and roof, along with water damage throughout the building.

Battalion Chief Bruce Barrs says the flames originated from the outside of one of the sides of the condos, crawling upwards to the roof, with the wind moving it further along.

“That block … suffered a significant amount of damage not only due to the fire on the fourth floor but the water damage throughout the building,” he told 660 NewsRadio.

He says the wind wasn’t as strong as what crews faced, but it still contributed to the fire spread.

While all residents from the affected building were evacuated, they were assessed on scene and no injuries were reported.

However, they will be displaced for a “considerable amount of time” due to the damage, Barrs said. He adds the Calgary Emergency Management Agency are assessing the needs of those displaced.

It’s unclear how many people are affected at this time.

Roads from Stoney Trail to 24 Street will remain closed as crews confirm extinguishment.

The cause is still under investigation.
