Calgary Flames reveal three stunning new Lunar New Year logos

The Calgary Flames are ringing in the Lunar New Year in style.

To commemorate the January 29 event, the Flames have unveiled three new logos along with a jersey to help mark the occasion. This includes a redesigned version of their primary logo as well as two very unique shoulder patches.

All three logos were designed by local artist Henry Raul Yu, a Venezuela-born Chinese Canadian.

The designs are set to take centre stage during the Flames’ Lunar New Year Celebration game on January 30 against the Anaheim Ducks.

The primary logo features the team’s iconic flaming “C” with redesigned flames, and a few stylized clouds are added on the bottom. According to a description provided by the team, the gold colour of the logo is meant to represent “good fortune and wealth,” while the redesigned flames are “Asian-inspired” and are meant to evoke the “team’s fierce determination and the cultural significance of fire as a purifying and protective force.”

The clouds below on the bottom of the logo “add a sense of movement and balance, symbolizing harmony and the continuous flow of life’s energies.”

It’s a striking logo with much thought put into it by Yu. That isn’t all, however, as there were also two shoulder patches designed. Each one features the Flames’ usual logo, but one is all black and encased within a moon, while the other is inside a sun rising over the Rocky Mountains.

“On one shoulder, a new moon emerges from a bed of clouds, representing renewal and the Lunar New Year’s connection to the moon’s cycles,” a social media post from the team reads.  On the other shoulder, the rising sun behind the iconic Rocky Mountains signifies hope, strength, and the city’s place at the intersection of natural beauty and human endeavour.”

The jersey that these logos adorn is pretty plain, with just a simple red practice jersey look. One of the most unique parts is that the numbers share the gold colour of the primary logo and have flames coming up from the bottom.

Unfortunately, this stunning look will not be worn by the Flames due to the NHL’s ban on special warmup jerseys, and it is not yet known whether or not the jersey will be available for the public to purchase.
