Calgary man’s comic book collection worth thousands stolen from storage unit

A Calgary man says it took just five minutes for a thief to break into his northeast storage unit — and leave with a comic book collection the owner claims is worth thousands.

“When I came and I saw that it was my comic collection, yeah it was a punch in the gut,” Heath McCoy told CityNews. “I mean, I’ve been collecting these since I was a kid. They had great sentimental value for me too, my whole life revolved around comics as a kid.”

“l had great locks on here, and I thought ‘Yeah, I should be fine, you know?’”

“The Amazing Spiderman,” “Captain Britain, and “X-Men” — were among some of the comics stolen, according to McCoy.

He says his X-Men collection alone is worth an estimated $2,500.

McCoy provided pictures taken from security cameras to CityNews, which show a man entering the block of Sentinel Storage units.

He says the thief gained access to his storage unit by cutting a latch on his unit’s door, adding he’s frustrated by the storage company’s handling of the situation, and the fact there weren’t more security measures in place.

“I’m frustrated that it took them a week to get back to me, and that they didn’t notice it was missing, and I think they should have better cameras,” McCoy said. “The camera upfront should at least be angled so it can capture someone’s licence when they’re coming in.”

CityNews reached out to Sentinel Storage, who declined to provide further information on the incident.

In an email, the company said “we cannot disclose or verify any information related to our clients due to privacy laws.”

Heath just hopes the thief will do the right thing, come forward, and return his prized collection.

“We’re looking at 40 years old some of these things are — it was a dirty thing to do, you know?” he said. “I would love to get it back.”
