National Geographic names Alberta spot a top snow destination

As Canadians, we often take the sight of winter snowfall for granted. But for those in warmer climates seeking the magic of a snowy day, one spot in Alberta was recently highlighted by National Geographic as one of the world’s best places to experience snow.

The magazine poured through historical data and seasonal trends to identify several locations globally where travellers have the best chance of experiencing a winter wonderland.

Lake Louise was listed as one of the top spots, with National Geographic saying that while the lake is stunning in the summer, it might be “even more photogenic when layered with snow.”

“In December alone, more than 27 inches of snow typically falls on this glassy, turquoise lake in south-western Canada,” it wrote.

“Many tourists use this tiny, charming settlement as a winter hub for hiking and skiing in the surrounding, white-flecked wilderness.”

National Geographic touted the area’s upmarket chalets, resorts, and restaurants of Lake Louise Village.

Other activities highlighted include ice skating in the village’s outdoor rink or riding a horse-drawn sleigh through the snow.

Other international spots to make the list were Rovaniemi, Finland; Sapporo City, Japan; Cairngorm Mountain, Scotland; and Zermatt, Switzerland.

Yellowstone National Park; Anchorage, Alaska; Mount Rainer, Washington; Syracuse, New York; and Breckenridge, Colorado, were the US destinations hailed as winter wonderlands.

Unsurprisingly, Lake Louise’s natural beauty has made a name for itself across Canada and on the world stage.

Last month, Lake Louise Ski Resort was named the best spot to ski in Canada by the 2024 World Ski Awards after claiming the top spot in 2023.

In November, Conde Nast Traveller named Lake Lousie and Banff one of North America’s best places to travel to in 2025.
