‘Largest single intake’: 110 cats and kittens surrendered to Calgary Humane Society

Over 100 cats and kittens from a single home were surrendered to the Calgary Humane Society (CHS) on Monday.

This is the latest in pet surrenders in the city, with the society calling this the “largest single intake of felines in recent years.”

Additionally, a notice of motion is before Calgary city council that could see the banning of the retail sale of pets like cats and dogs due to an increase in pet surrenders.

CHS says 110 cats arrived on Monday which has placed a significant strain on the shelter’s capacity and resources.

As a result, the humane society is asking for help through foster homes, adoptions, and donations.

“While our team is well-equipped for situations like this, the sheer volume of animals requires additional resources and community support,” said Anna-Lee Fitzsimmons with CHS.

Most of the felines are affiliative and in “reasonably” good health despite their living conditions.

However, medical attention was provided, and they are now being examined and receiving treatment, including spaying and neutering.

Fitzsimmons says the goal is to help the cats so they can go into foster homes or be adopted before the holidays.

“This situation highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering,” said Fitzsimmons. “We’re committed to supporting our community and preventing situations like this from happening again.”
