Suspect sought after church nativity display set on fire in NE Calgary

Calgary police are looking for a man suspected of starting a fire at a church in the city’s northeast.

Police allege a man entered a parking lot of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Roman Catholic Parish, in the area of 16 Avenue NE and 19 Street NE, around 8:15 p.m. on Apr. 21.

The suspected is alleged to have set a nativity display on fire before running away.

Fire crews were called to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. Police say the church sustained minor damage.

Investigators have released a photo of a suspect they believe to be responsible for the fire. He is described as a 20 to 40-year-old man, six-feet tall, with a heavy build.

He was last seen wearing a neon-yellow hoodie, black gloves, black running shoes and was carrying a black backpack. He was also last seen heading west on 14 Avenue NE before turning south into an alley between 16 Street NE and 16A Street NE.

Investigators have not confirmed a motive, but say the Hate Crime Prevention Team is part of the investigation.

Police are asking any residents of the Mayland Heights neighbourhood who may have security footage of the area on the day of the fire to contact them.
